LOS ANGELES PLAYWRIGHT WINS SECOND PLACE IN FIRST ANNUAL OHIO STATE PLAYWRITING CONTEST.

Los Angeles playwright and novelist Gil Roscoe has won second place in the first annual playwriting contest held at The Ohio State University at Newark. Two hundred and seventy-six plays were entered and Mr. Roscoe's play Sunset Semester placed second bringing him a prize of $300. His eight character play takes place in a college classroom as a physics teacher tries to explain the basics of Einstein's theory of relativity to philosophy majors who are having trouble accepting its principles. Professor Dave Williams praised the play and encouraged Mr. Roscoe to continue to try to get it produced.

Gil Roscoe has had one-act plays produced at both The Attic Theatre and The Group Repertory Theatre in Los Angeles. His novel Company of Thieves was published by Kensington Books in 2001. It was optioned by Alcon Entertainment (The Blind Side) for six years. He is a member of The Dramatists Guild and The Greater Los Angeles Writers Society.

Morgan St. James will guest on Vito Colucci’s Crime Time radio show on Business Talk Radio this Sunday, July 3, at 8:00 p.m. PST and 11:00 p.m. EST for a one-hour interview. It airs in several broadcast radio markets across the country as well as online. They discuss her upcoming new Silver Sisters Mystery, Vanishing Act in Vegas filled with twists and turns, plus capers to make you laugh out loud, and Las Vegas kitsch. The wacky Silver Sister twins are at it again, outshined only by their 80 year-old mother and uncle, former vaudeville magicians who love to dress in disguise and go undercover.

They also discuss her new Writers’ Tricks of the Trade: 39 Things You Need to Know About the ABCs of Writing based upon her popular column in the Los Angeles and Las Vegas editions of www.examiner.com. The book will be released later this year. St. James describes it as the appetizer table at the writers' buffet--a handy reference for fiction writers presented in the humorous, conversational style of her column.

As St. James says, "I learned in the school of hard knocks and anecdotes are sprinkled throughout the book. I made the mistakes--why should you?"

Vito is a high profile private investigator who appears as a guest on many well known radio and TV shows.

Lisa Morton wins Superior Achievement Award for First Novel "The Castle of Los Angeles" at the Horror Writers Association's 2010 Bram Stoker Awards

The Horror Writers Association announced the winners of the 2010 Bram Stoker Awards at its annual Stoker Banquet tonight as part of the Stoker Awards Weekend held this year in Long Island, New York. Ten new bronze haunted-house statuettes were handed over to the writers responsible for creating superior works of horror last year. This year’s winners included:GLAWS Member Lisa Morton winning Superior Achievement Award in a tie for "The Castle of Los Angeles"

Lisa Morton is a born-and-raised Los Angeleno, three-time Stoker Award winner, Black Quill Award winner, occasional screenwriter, hopeless Sinophile, and Halloween expert. She lives online at www.lisamorton.com.

Works can be recommended by any member of the HWA. Members with Active status then vote works onto a preliminary ballot. From there the field is narrowed to the final ballot and Active members choose the winners from that. The award is named for Bram Stoker, best known as the author of Dracula. Kathy Porter is the 2011 International Book Award Winner

Lisa Marguerite Mora Announces New Hidden Wisdom Writing Workshop
and Newsletter

GLAWS member Lisa Marguerite Mora is conducting Hidden Wisdom Writing Workshop for five weeks in Venice at the Electric Lodge. The Tuesday evening workshop begins at 7 to 9:30 from June 14 thru July 12. The workshop offers improvisational writing exercises and an opportunity to schedule constructive critique on a chapter from your novel, memoir, or on your essays and poetry.

Lisa is a prize winning poet, published writer,and professional editor. She has studied with author Carolyn See, Jim Krusoe, Jack Grapes, as well as taken courses on writing and copyedting through UCLA’s Writers Program. She has studied story structure with literary agent and consultant Lisa Cron and has conducted workshops for California State University Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Library, and is on staff at Santa Monica College Continuing Education.

Lisa also puts out a newsletter once a month geared toward writing and editing--Wordsmith--A Short newsletter for readers & writers and the Occasional Fan of Charlotte Bronte. A section of the newsletter is devoted to Charlotte Bronte news and will also be including some words about Lisa's process in writing her novel-in-progress in which Bronte plays a part. Dan Lambert's stories "Sisters" and "The Horror at the Mall" published in Daily Bites of Flesh 2011, a horror flash-fiction anthology

Los Angeles, California: May 18th, 2011 – GLAWS member Dan Lambert's stories "Sisters" and "The Horror at the Mall" appear in Daily Bites of Flesh 2011, a yearly anthology of horror "flash fiction," featuring stories under 500 words in length. The anthology is described by the publisher as "365 Days of Horrifying Flash Fiction."

The anthology is published by Pill Hill Press, which is based in Chadron, Nebraska. The editor of the 546-page anthology is Jessy Marie Roberts. Ms. Roberts has organized the book as a daily calendar anthology, featuring one piece of horror flash fiction for every day of the year 2011. Lambert's stories appear in the anthology as March 27th and September 2nd, 2011.

Brennan Harvey Wins International Writing Contest & Honored at Hollywood Gala

GLAWS member Brennan Harvey from Huntington Beach, will be honored at the 27th Annual L. Ron Hubbard Achievement awards being held on Sunday, 15 May, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, on Hollywood Blvd --first home of the Academy Awards. (He is pictured below (center) with GLAWS officers Ace Hall(L) and Tony N Todaro (R).

Brennan Harvey's talent for writing was first recognized in high school. He won a certificate for composing an exceptional article for the school bulletin. Brennan began writing fiction in 1998. He took creative writing classes and attended workshops, seminars, conventions and conferences. He has been entering the Writers of the Future contest since 2004.

The event will celebrate the annual winners in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests, where Brennan was the 1st quarter, first place winner for this year, making it further than some several thousand others who entered the international competition, and where his winning story, Lies of Convenience will also be published in the bestselling Science Fiction anthology series – L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume XXVII.

Alongside Brennan will be winners flown in from as far away as Australia, South Africa, and across the USA. They will also be treated to a week long workshop taught by contest judges.

GLAWS Member Publishes Erotic Story

GLAWS member Dan Lambert's story "The Gazebo" has been published in the first issue of Daily Flashes of Erotica Quarterly, a journal of erotic fiction.

Los Angeles, California: January 1st, 2011 – Dan Lambert's story "The Gazebo" appears in Volume One, Number One of Daily Flashes of Erotica, a quarterly journal of erotic "flash fiction," featuring stories under 500 words in length.
