The Art of Adding Mythic
Structure to Enrich Your Novel

No matter what genre you're writing, adding a taste of mythic structure can greatly enrich the flavor of your novel. Just ask the authors of “Silence of the Lambs”, “The Da Vinci Code”, and “Harry Potter". A panel of educators and authors discuss why this can be important to the enrichment of your novel and how to build it in your work. Learn more about our guest speakers and their guidelines below.

The Greater Los Angeles Writers Society is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for writers of all disciplines to meet and discuss the craft and the business of writing. GLAWS accomplishes this through monthly meetings, discussion forums, critique groups, special writer appearances, conferences, and other events conducted for the purpose of educating and mentoring writers of all levels of expertise. GLAWS Special Speaker Events are open to the public, and a great venue to meet other writers and expand your expertise.

Michael Steven Gregory at the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society

Eric Swelstad, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Media Arts, joined the Media Arts Department in 2001. Eric has a BA and Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University, and has also guest-lectured in the Cinema/Screenwriting Departments at UCLA, California State University, Northridge, and Emerson College.

A screenwriter and director, Eric has worked for such companies as HBO, Paramount Pictures, and Big Picture Entertainment. A movie-of-the-week he directed was nominated for an Emmy, and he has won two Telly Awards for his work in television. His teen-comedy feature “Scooter Kidz,” and the supernatural film “Heartland of Darkness” have aired on cable, and most recently he directed the high-definition feature, “Frankenstein Rising.”

A member of the Writer’s Guild of America, West, Eric co-wrote the MGM feature “Lucky 13,” and the upcoming thriller “Four Horsemen.”

Jamie Weiss Chilton at the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society Sarah Beach has both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in English, specializing in medieval literature. Her personal studies of mythology led her to write THE SCRIBBLER'S GUIDE TO THE LAND OF MYTH, about the mythic structures writers use to enhance their stories. Sarah Beach at GLAWS

She spent 18 years on the research staff of the quiz show JEOPARDY! She as published a range of writings, from literary scholarship to comic book short stories.

She was also the Chair of the Mythcon 40 Convention held at UCLA in 2009.

Denise Dumars Denise Dumars, M. A. is a literary agent for the Ashley Grayson Literary Agency in San Pedro, CA. She specializes in agenting New Age and Metaphysical nonfiction, as well as science fiction, fantasy, horror, and literary fiction.
