"Beyond the First Draft - Essentials to Editing Your Novel Successfully"
So you've just finished writing the next best-selling novel and think that you're done. Think again. Most authors view their first draft as their worst. It's the second and additional drafts where the novel or short-story really comes to life. While some consider this process to be part luck and part voodoo, GLAWS presents a panel of professional editors and authors who discuss the best ways to hone a masterpiece (i.e., worthy of publishing) by knowing what to look for and how to best fix it.

Barbara Ardinger
Barbara Ardinger, Ph.D. (www.barbaraardinger.com), is a published author and freelance editor. To date, she has edited more than 200 books, most of them for authors going to small, vanity, or on-demand presses. The 200 projects are both fiction and nonfiction and also include screenplays, children's books, academic discourse (textbooks and doctoral and master's theses), web site text, and some poetry. Fiction edited includes romance, action-adventure, science fiction, western, mystery, historical, speculative, and horror novels. Nonfiction edited includes philosophy (mostly mainstream metaphysics and New Age), Calvinist theology, holistic health, science and technology, political tracts, business topics, history, and memoirs and biography. The authors live around the U.S. and around the world, and for many of them, English is their second language. Barbara has also taught university classes in writing and public speaking and has worked as a technical editor (four different industries).
Barbara lives in Southern California with her two rescued Maine coon cats, Heisenberg and Schroedinger. When she can get away from the computer, she goes to the theater as often as possible—she loves musical theater and movies in which people sing and dance. She is also an active CERT (Community Emergency Rescue Team) volunteer and a member (and occasional secretary pro-tem) of a neighborhood organization that focuses on code enforcement and safety for citizens. She has been an AIDS emotional support volunteer and a literacy volunteer. She is an active member of the neopagan community and is well known for the rituals she creates and leads.
Lisa Marguerite Mora
Lisa Marguerite Mora of Barrington Editorial Services offers manuscript critiques/editing and creative writing/editing workshops. While she is an excellent line editor, she can also help with broader problems of content and structure. Lisa was an Assistant Fiction Editor at 42opus an Online Literary Magazine of the Arts and now offers Hidden Wisdom Writing Workshops — Finding the Words in the Writer and the Writer in the Words — an eight-week creative writing workshop. She holds a Bachelors Degree in English-Creative Writing Emphasis-from UCLA, where she studied under Carolyn See.
She has studied editing with the editor of a literary journal, story structure with a literary agent and consultant, as well as copyediting at UCLA Extension. A member of PEN, she has had work published and forthcoming in several small regional and national literary journals in the United States (Rattle, ONTHEBUS, Common Ties, California Quarterly, Literary Mama, The Venice Beachhead, among others. Lisa has conducted workshops at Cal State Los Angeles and is an instructor at Santa Monica College Community Services. With her literature and writing background, and her sharp eye for mechanical incongruities, her editing skills have helped many documents and manuscripts find a clearer direction and focus, and a more resonant voice. Dan Lambert Daniel holds a master’s degree in English from Loyola Marymount University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Loyola Marymount University, and an associate degree in History from El Camino College in Torrance. Daniel teaches English at California State University Dominguez Hills and East Los Angeles College. He has taught English at DeVry University, West Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Los Angeles City College, and Harbor College. His writing appears in such publications as Easy Reader, Torrance People, Other Worlds, Wrapped In Plastic, and Games Unplugged. His poetry appears in the anthologies Faces of Love, Tales on the Twisted Side, and The Manuscripter Volume II. Tony N Todaro (moderator) is an author, professional writer, a veteran brand strategist and creative consultant, writing for a wide range of organizations, from non-profits to Fortune 1000 companies, investment groups, Hollywood unions and the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center SD / DOD. He is Co-founder and President of the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society, a member of the Los Angeles Science Fiction & Fantasy Society, Associate Member of the Jedi Knights, and a consultant on many writer programs. He is a perennial speaker at the Los Angeles Regional Science Fiction Convention, the San Diego Science Fiction Convention, Westercon, the Bay Area Science Fiction Convention, a recognized professional at Comic-Con and Wondercon, and other national events. Tony has written for national ad campaigns, investment groups, and collateral for major corporations. He was awarded a grant from Los Angeles Valley College to strategize and author the branding and web site for their Cinema, Broadcast and Screenwriting programs. He is also on staff at LAVC as a professional expert to the Entertainment Industry Training Consortium. He has authored two novels in the Lightriders Saga series including "True Light" and "Nexus of Swords", and the forthcoming "What Comes Around" his new time-travel murder mystery in the Xander Hunt series. The sequel "The Eyes of God" is almost completed. He is always writing, authoring novels. short stories, and articles on the craft of writing. He also edits the work of others.
